Newly elected Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) is under scrutiny as personal financial disclosures spanning from 2016 reveal an apparently precarious financial situation. Johnson has consistently omitted reporting any checking or savings accounts in his name, or in his family's, over the past seven years. The absence of disclosed assets, even in investments, raises questions about Johnson's financial standing, especially given his role as a congressman and speaker. While it is improbable that Johnson lacks a bank account, speculation arises that he might be living paycheck to paycheck, potentially explaining the failure to trigger the checking account disclosure rules set by the House Ethics Committee. These guidelines require members to disclose all bank accounts holding at least $1,000, with a combined value exceeding $5,000. Johnson's reported household income, placing him in the top 12 percent of U.S. earners, makes the absence of qualifying bank account disclosure highly unusual for a member of Congress. The Daily Beast sought comment from Johnson's office, but no response was received.
