India is reportedly trying to keep its troops and military equipment in the Maldives. Reports say the countries have set up a committee to discuss New Delhi's deployment to the strategically important island nation. On Sunday, Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu had announced that India had agreed to withdraw around 70 of its soldiers. Both China and India vie for influence in the Maldives. Most of the Indian soldiers deployed there help the Maldives patrol its vast maritime territory. Mr Muizzu had vowed to rid the island of all foreign military presence during his inauguration.
