Summary: Hamas has released the first batch of hostages under a ceasefire deal, including 13 Israelis who had been held in the Gaza Strip since the militant group staged a raid on Israel nearly seven weeks ago, according to officials.
The landmark agreement, brokered by the state of Qatar, came into force at 5am on Friday, a day later than scheduled. The deal will see dozens of Israeli hostages released by the militant group, as well as a number of Palestinians imprisoned on the other side.
It is the first prolonged break since the devastating war broke out on October 7. The Mirror reports that a total of 13 women and children are expected to be released at 2pm, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he had received an “initial” list of names of hostages that will go free.
