Israeli-Americans and supporters of Israel gathered at the National Mall in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday to show their support towards Israel and protest antisemitism triggered worldwide amid the ongoing conflict with Hamas militants in the Gaza strip.
Sharing words of encouragement and inspiration to protesters, Israeli President Isaac Herzog phoned in from Israel. "Never again," he cried, reflecting on the brutal attack committed by Hamas militants on Oct. 7 — which left more than 1,200 dead in south Israel.
American immigrants, foreign ambassadors, families of Hamas hostages and speakers from Israel — including musicians and government officials — took the podium throughout the event to share tales of Israel's past and stories of the harrowing reality experienced by the Jewish masses during the Second World War.
U.S. senate majority leader Chuck Schumer, congressman Ritchie Torres and Stranger Things' star Brett Gelman, too, made an appearance. In his speech, Gelman said he had friends "turn their backs" on him since the conflict broke out, emphasizing a feeling of betrayal.
Following Hamas's unprecedented attack five weeks ago, Israel vowed the destruction of the opposing militant force — which operates out of Gaza.
Their ongoing military campaign against Gaza has been the subject of intense criticism worldwide over concerns regarding the impact on the civilian population of Gaza.
