During the Cold War, neutral Finland had to toe the line with Russia, fearful of reprisal and repression. It will do so no longer. Now bolstered by its Western Allies, Finland offers undeniable physical, material, and technological benefits to NATO.
And that should scare Putin.
It’s unclear whether Russia has the strategic or economic bandwidth to adequately deal with the security complications posed by Finland’s NATO membership. Now Russia will have to make a choice on how to engage in the Baltic-Arctic region.
