Thousands of protesters marched on the streets of Manhattan, New York City in a show of solidarity with the Palestinian people, just hours ahead of New Year's Eve celebrations, to call for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. Footage shows protesters marching with signs reading 'Free Palestine', 'Stop the genocide' and 'Free Gaza' and chanting 'We won't pay for Israel's slaughter'. It also shows what appears to be a pro-Israel supporter being arrested by the NYPD after an altercation with pro-Palestine demonstrators. Members of the Orthodox Jewish community were also spotted joining the protest with signs reading 'Judaism condemns the State of Israel'. "We refuse to shut up, we refuse to stay silent. Eric Adams told us to stay home today, NYPD wants us to stay home today, but every bone in our body tells us the truth, that if we stand with Palestine we will not stop to mobilise every day of our lives," said Alan, one speaker at the march. This protest comes after the city's mayor, Eric Adams, announced that he had ordered the NYPD to step up security ahead of New Years' celebrations in anticipation of protests. Speakers at the march called on supporters to continue their rallies. "Today, once again, the enemy wants us to believe that the Palestinian people have been defeated. Here, in the belly of the beast they want you to believe that the movement is not important. That our protests have no impact and are detached from the struggle back home, if this is true why Netanyahu is crying about protests in the west?" one of the speakers said. Fighting between Israel and Hamas continues in Gaza, as the conflict approaches the end of its third month. Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on southern Israel on October 7, killing around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200 according to Israeli officials. Israel declared war on the group and a 'complete siege' of Gaza, with a large-scale campaign of air strikes. A ground incursion began at the end of the third week, with Israeli leaders vowing to 'wipe out' Hamas. Palestinian officials reported that at least 21,000 people had been killed and more than 56,000 injured at time of publication. The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) claimed that Hamas locations and infrastructure were targeted in the response. However, United Nations experts warned against 'collective punishment' for the people of Gaza, before predicting a 'humanitarian crisis' and then claimed that 'hell is settling in' for the region.
