The mayor of Paris is declaring "no one is safe" from bed bugs as the city's homes, hotels, theatres and public transport fight a major infestation with French officials pledging to take further action this week.
Social media footage and online articles have reported the insects crawling around high-speed trains and cinemas.
French Transport Minister Clement Beaune said he would convene a meeting later in the week to “undertake further action” from the reported surge in numbers of bed bugs.
French authorities have started a drive to exterminate the pests ahead of the Paris Olympics that's commencing less than a year away.
Bed bugs generally come out at night to feed on human blood and their bites leave red areas on the skin that can cause intense itching.
