Hi, Jordan Sandler here with More Prepared Minutes. An earthquake has happened while you're at home, and the shaking has stopped -- now what do you do? First, make sure it's safe to move, and if it is, exit your home. There will be aftershocks that can be strong enough to do additional damage to your home.
Locate your emergency supplies or More Prepared Home Survival Kit. Help any injured family members using the first aid supplies in your kit, and call for help if phone lines are available. Put on long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, and sturdy shoes. Make sure you keep the shoes under your bed to protect your feet from broken glass and debris. Use the work gloves that are in your kit to protect your hands from injury from broken objects.
Check for gas leaks. If you smell gas or hear a blowing or hissing noise, open a window and quickly leave your home. Turn off the gas at the outside main valve with your gas shut-off wrench in your kit and call the gas company from a neighbor's home. If you turn off the gas for any reason, it must be turned back on by a professional.
Next, look for electrical system damage. If you see sparks or broken or frayed wires, or smell hot insulation, turn off the electricity at the main fuse box or circuit breaker.
Check for sewage and water line damage. If you suspect sewage lines are damaged, shut off the water to your home so your water heater and toilet will not be contaminated. Avoid using the toilets. More Prepared Home Survival Kits contain sanitation bags and chemicals in case your water supply is cut off. The pail even serves as a portable toilet if needed. A toilet seat is also available for ease of use.
Bring out your fire extinguisher to put out any small fires -- they are the most common hazard after an earthquake. Clean up any flammable liquid spills to prevent fires. Listen to the 3 in 1 Solar Powered Radio/Flashlight/Cell Phone Charger that's in your kit for the latest emergency information.
Feel relieved that you prepared for this day and bought a More Prepared Home Survival Kit for your family. Everything you need for 72 hour emergency survival is conveniently included in this sturdy red pail. I'm Jordan Sandler with More Prepared, where peace of mind is just one click away.
