The US and the UK launched strikes against Houthi rebels in Yemen, the first on the country since the Iran-backed group started targeting ships in the Red Sea.
US President Joe Biden has gone one step ahead to caution that he would not hesitate to carry out further action if needed. "These targeted strikes are a clear message that the United States and our partners will not tolerate attacks on our personnel or allow hostile actors to imperil freedom of navigation," Biden said.
UK's ministry of defense said that early indications are that the Houthis' ability to threaten merchant shipping has taken a blow. This comes months after the Israel-Hamas war in the Middle East. Houthi rebels say their attacks are in support of the Hamas.
Meanwhile. EAM Jaishankar and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken shared concerns regarding the Houthi attacks. "A good discussion this evening with my friend Antony Blinken. Our conversation focused on maritime security challenges, especially the Red Sea region. Appreciated his insights on the ongoing situation in West Asia, including Gaza. Exchanged perspectives on developments pertaining to the Ukraine conflict," Jaishankar tweeted.
Earlier, MV Chem Pluto, a cargo vessel carrying crude oil from Saudi Arabia, was targeted in a drone attack allegedly by Houthi militants by a drone off India's west coast when it was on its way to New Mangalore port. 20 Indian and Vietnamese crew were onboard the merchant ship. No one was injured in the attack.
