The US is said to have approved a sanctions waiver that will allow Iran to access at least $10 billion in previously frozen funds held in Iraq. The new 120-day waiver allows Iraq to transfer frozen electricity payments into Iranian-owned bank accounts in Europe and Oman.
Iraq owes Iran around $11 billion for imports of gas and electricity, but US sanctions prohibit dollar transactions with Iran. However, Tehran could only use the funds for "non-sanctionable transactions" such as buying humanitarian goods like food and agricultural products. The US has imposed a range of sanctions on Tehran over its nuclear program and support for militant organization.
