At least 48 people are confirmed dead following a major earthquake in Japan, a local official said.
The official in Ishikawa prefecture, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told AFP the "death count has reached 48".

The 7.5-magnitude quake, which hit Ishikawa prefecture on the main island of Honshu, triggered tsunami waves more than a metre high, toppled buildings, caused a major fire and tore apart roads.
