Millions have been displaced from their homes. What is the U.S. doing? What is Europe doing? What is the U.N. doing? They are not playing their role. STORYLINE:
Protesters in Karachi rallied on Sunday to express their solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, where weeks of brutal war have taken a heavy toll.
"Stand up for Gaza," read one of the banners in the rally, which featured dozens of protesters waving Palestinian flags.
"America must stop backing Israel. It must make Israel cease fire completely," said Hafiz Naeemur Rehman, the Karachi cheif of the Jamaat-e-Islami religious party.
The latest conflict between Israel and Hamas is by far the deadliest and most destructive of their five wars since the militant group seized the Gaza Strip in 2007.
The war sparked when Hamas-led militants stormed communities in southern Israel on Oct. 7, killing 1,200 and taking 240 hostage.
Since then, Israel has unleashed thousands of airstrikes and waged a fierce ground offensive, flattening entire neighborhoods.
The war has devastated parts of the Gaza Strip, killed roughly 20,400 Palestinians and displaced nearly 85% of Gaza’s 2.3 million people.
Khalid Khan, a protester in the Karachi rally, said he was disappointed in the global response to the war including the role played by some Muslim countries.
"All the nations of the world have turned against Palestine. This includes Muslim countries too. They are silent. In fact, they are one way or another supporting Israel," he said.
