Israel's military claims to have exposed 1,5000 tunnels used by Hamas in Gaza during the conflict.
However, Israel has come under renewed pressure from its friends over its ­conduct in the war on Gaza, with both the White House and Rishi Sunak ­appealing for a change of course.
In a sign of increasing demands to ­renew ceasefire talks, Binyamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, sent David Barnea, the head of Mossad, to reopen discussions with the CIA director and the Qatari prime minister who ­mediated the last truce in the war.
Lloyd Austin, the US defence secretary, held talks with Netanyahu and his opposite number, Yoav Gallant, in Israel to say that Washington still stood behind Israel, including with arms, but it had to do more to protect civilians and move to a lower intensity operation. “Democracies are stronger when they operate by the rules of law,” Austin said.
