Afghanistan has 'permanently' shut down its embassy in India. Officials also cited a 'lack of support from the host government' and failure to 'meet the expectations of Afghanistan.' This decision follows the embassy's earlier cessation of operations on September 30, when it announced it would stop operations starting that Sunday. Prior to that, the Afghan Embassy had purportedly issued a communication expressing concerns and communicated the shutdown of its operations in India. Despite an eight-week wait, the embassy claims it did not receive a positive response. Currently, there are no diplomats from the Afghan Republic in India, as stated in its release. Those who served in the national capital have safely reached third countries. Another reason for the shutdown is the significant decline in the Afghan community in India. A substantial number of refugees, students, and traders from Afghanistan have left the nation. According to statistics, this number nearly halved since August 2021, with limited new visas issued during this period. A shortage of staff is cited as another reason. The embassy had earlier stated that there had been a significant reduction in personnel and resources due to unforeseen circumstances, making it challenging for them to continue operations in India.
